Peel police have issued an arrest warrant for a man they consider armed and dangerous following a hit-and-run in Mississauga Tuesday night.

According to police, officers attempted to stop a driver on Absolute Avenue, in the Hurontairo Street and Burnhamthorpe Road East area, at approximately 8:15 p.m. However, the driver fled from police, striking a pedestrian in the process.

The 46-year-old male pedestrian was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital with head and internal injuries, as well as a fractured leg.

The man remains in hospital in critical condition.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is now investigating the incident as it is their mandate to look into cases where civilians are seriously injured or killed while in the presence of police.

On Wednesday, Peel police issued an arrest warrant for a suspect identified as 26-year-old Brampton resident Jerome Jackson.

According to police, the suspect is black, five-foot-eight, with a heavy build and a beard.

Police are urging anyone who encounters the suspect to contact 911 or local police immediately.

Police are also asking the public to be on the lookout for the vehicle they say the suspect was operating at the time of the attempted stop.

The vehicle is described as a black 2007 Lincoln MKX SUV with the licence plate BNBA718.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 905-453-2121 ext. 1233 or Crime Stopper at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
