Subway riders using Union Station should find themselves with a little more room to breathe today.

The TTC officially opened a new subway platform at the transit hub Monday at 6 a.m.

The redesigned platform features a new configuration that will see commuters use separate platforms to board Downsview-bound trains and Finch-bound trains. The TTC says the new configuration will double passenger capacity at the busy station.

TTC CEO Andy Byford was on-hand at the station Monday morning to greet customers and point them in the right direction. Speaking with CP24, he said the new platform is part of the transit agency’s larger push to modernize.

“Today marks this opening but there’s much more to do to get the existing platform refurbished and this is just part of the modernization of the TTC that we’re rapidly roiling out,” Byford said. “We’ve got new streetcars coming on Aug. 31 and it’s full steam ahead getting everything modernized at the TTC and giving Toronto a transit system that it can be proud of.”

In the works for three years, the platform is part of a $137.5 million overhaul of Union Station that is being funded by all three levels of government.
