The Yonge-University subway line, between Lawrence and Bloor Stations, will remain closed until 6 a.m. Friday after electrical cables fell near Eglinton station at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The TTC says crews have to repair a vital signaling cable that was damaged this afternoon, when a cable bundle came loose from a wall just south of the station.

The service closure during rush hour forced thousands of commuters to the surface around the Bloor and Yonge Streets area causing major traffic congestion.

Thousands of subway riders were stuck on the streets -- trying to find ways of getting home from downtown.

Subway trains are turning back at Bloor and Lawrence Stations and shuttle buses are servicing commuters on Yonge Street between the two stops.

All other subway lines are operating, including the University and Spadina lines, Bloor-Danforth line, Sheppard line and the Scarborough RT.

Initially, the TTC had estimated that service would resume within the next two hours after the cables became loose.
