A 28-year-old Midland man is nursing just a few cuts and bruises after a piece of concrete fell into his car from a Highway 400 overpass on Friday.

Two lanes of the northbound Highway 400 were closed after the accident, in which a soccer ball-sized chunk of concrete fell from the overpass, going through a vehicle's front, driver-side window.

The driver was able to pull over safely, and was treated for minor injuries in hospital in Alliston. His passenger was not harmed.

Two lanes of the highway were closed between Highway 88 and Highway 89, near the Cookstown exit.

The lanes stayed closed for several hours while crews repaired the bridge, causing serious delays for drivers travelling to Barrie during the afternoon rush hour.

Workers say the bridge is roughly forty years old, but engineers don't think age played a factor in today's incident. They believe the recent cold snap likely triggered the collapse.

An inspector who was called to the scene has concluded there is no danger of more pieces falling from the bridge.

This past summer, a transport truck grazed the same overpass. Inspectors say that incident did not play a part in today's collapse.
