York University's striking union has tabled a counter-offer to the administration as the two sides prepare to resume talks in the months-long strike.

CUPE Local 3903, which represents teaching assistants, graduate students and part-time faculty, has not revealed details of the proposal, which marks the first significant move since negotiations collapsed almost three weeks ago.

CUPE 3903 represents about 3,300 members.

Friday's talks mark the fourth round of face-to-face negotiations since the strike put the school's 50,000 students out of class Nov. 6.

On Wednesday, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced he had appointed the province's top negotiator, Reg Pearson, to "bang a few heads together" and try to end the strike.

About 5,000 business, law and humanities students are to resume classes on Monday. They will be taught by tenured professors who are not part of the same union.
