OTTAWA - The Canadian Forces says virtually all the allegations of mistreatment of Afghan prisoners by Canadian troops are unfounded.

The military police, in a release Monday night, said troops acted appropriately when interacting with the detainees.

There had been about a dozen allegations of detainees being forced to adopt a new religion, of not having been afforded the time to go to the washroom or the ability to wash for religious rituals - a Muslim custom.

The military police looked into claims made between 2006 and 2009 and only one allegation from 2008 remains under investigation.

The statement says the soldiers have been cleared of wrongdoing, but other aspects remain under investigation.

The statement comes as a committee of MPs looks into allegations that the Conservative government ignored warnings of abuse of detainees by Afghan authorities after they were handed over by Canadian troops.
