Stanley James Tippett has been charged in the ongoing investigation involving a 12-year-old Peterborough girl who was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted.

Tippett, 32, of Collison Crescent in Peterborough was arrested at 8:40 a.m. this morning.

Police found the girl at Courtice Secondary School after receiving a call at 2:20 a.m. from a resident who heard screams from the schoolyard. Courtice is about 40 minutes from Peterborough.

Police were drawn into the pursuit of a red minivan that was parked at the scene, but had to call off the chase because of high speeds. The vehicle was later found abandoned.

Sergeant Walter Decelemente says the girl was reported missing at 1:35 a.m.

She had been at a birthday party and was supposed to stay with her grandmother that night, he says.

Earlier, a 16-year-old girl was thought to have been abducted from the same party but was later found at a friend's house.

Decelemente says parents were at home at the time of the party.

Police say the investigation is continuing and further charges are pending. Tippett will appear at Provincial Court in Peterborough on Thursday.

There is a Toronto connection to the suspect in this case.

Sharmini Anan-davel was 15-years old when she went missing in June 1999. Four months later, her remains were discovered in a ravine.

At the time, Tippett admitted to a Toronto newspaper that he was a suspect in the girl's murder and that police had searched his home and car. The case remains unsolved to this day.
