TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jaus have claimed first baseman Mauro Gomez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and have optioned him to triple-A Buffalo.

Gomez made his Major League debut last season with Boston, posting a .275 average with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 37 games.

The six-foot-two, 230-pound native of Bani, Dominican Republic has a .281 career minor league average with 130 home runs and 512 RBI over nine seasons.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated right-hander David Bush for assignment.
