The Canadian Olympic Committee feels it's on the right track after reaching its goal of a top-16 finish at the Beijing Games.

The COC will shoot for a top-12 finish at the 2012 Summer Games in London.

COC chief executive officer Chris Rudge says the difference in Canada's preparation for Beijing compared to Athens was like night and day.

Almost every athlete had been to Beijing for training or competition prior to the Games.

In addition, former Olympians appeared at seminars to provide athletes with advice on how to handle the distractions and frustrations at the Games.

Looking ahead to London, Rudge says more government funding would be welcome.

He also feels that more sports facilities -- especially in southern Ontario where one-third of Canada's population resides -- would increase the pool of athletes with medal potential.

The next Winter Olympics will be held in 2010 in Vancouver.
