CHANGCHUN, China - Kristina Groves' torrid start continued Saturday.

The Ottawa native won the gold medal in the women's 1,000 at a long-track speedskating World Cup event Saturday.

That puts Groves in first place in the 1,000-metre overall rankings.

Winnipeg's Shannon Rempel added a silver medal, finishing 0.02 seconds behind.

"This was a great race," Groves said. "I was in good shape and ready to skate. I'm very satisfied with my performance."

Canadian women took three of the top four positions in the 1,000, with Winnipeg's Brittany Schussler finishing fourth with a time of 1:19.01, missing the podium by just nine-tenths of a second.
