DETROIT - Chris Chelios is finally calling it quits.

The 48-year-old defenceman has announced his retirement after 26 seasons in the NHL.

His 1,651 career games with Detroit, Montreal, Chicago and Atlanta are the most by any defenceman in NHL history.

The three-time Norris Trophy winner will continue to be involved with the game, accepting a job with the Red Wings as an adviser to hockey operations.

A three-time Stanley Cup winner, Chelios retires with 185 career goals and 763 assists in the regular season. He added an additional 31 goals and 113 assists in the playoffs.
