LOS ANGELES - A public memorial in Los Angeles for Canadian actor Corey Haim will not go ahead as planned.

Friend and former co-star Corey Feldman has written on his blog that after much consideration and planning, Haim's mother decided against holding the memorial.

Feldman says Judy Haim feels it would be too much for her to bear at this time.

Instead, close friends will have a private dinner in Haim's honour.

Haim, 38, died last month in Burbank, Calif., with an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs.

The Toronto-born actor rose to stardom in a string of '80s teen films including "Lucas" and "The Lost Boys," but battled drug addiction later in life and suffered financial woes that included his filing for bankruptcy in 1997.

On Tuesday, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said Haim had obtained 553 prescription pills in the two months before his death, including Valium, Vicodin, Xanax and Soma.

He called Haim a "poster child" for prescription drug abuse.

Feldman thanked fans for their kind words left on his blog's comments section and expressed regret that so many were eager to trash Haim.

"I will admit that shockingly there have been some terrible, awful, and heartless messages which you will not find posted here. It's amazing to me how people could be so cruel during a time of such great grief for so many," Feldman wrote, and added that he too felt unfairly targeted by the media.

"I have lost many who were very close to me in a very short time. However that does not stop the press from attacking me. It seems they will not be happy until I'm dead too," Feldman wrote.

"The second I leave my house they follow me, then make a spectacle, and then berate me for trying to get out of the house and live my life. Would they rather I hid in a cave waiting for depression to fully encompass my soul?

"I'm sorry but I choose to live my life and move forward as best as possible. I have a child, therefore I must work. I cannot dwell in misery. Instead I have been planning my future."
