MONTREAL - A Quebec coroner says the federal government should ban the type of semi-automatic rifle used by the gunman who killed a student and wounded 16 others at Dawson College nearly two years ago.

Coroner Jacques Ramsey also says in a report on the rampage that some health and education officials should have wider access to the federal and provincial gun registries.

Gunman Kimveer Gill stormed into Dawson's downtown campus nearly two years ago, fatally shooting student Anastasia De Sousa and wounding 16 others in the Sept. 13, 2006, incident.

Gill was wounded by police in a standoff and killed himself as they moved in to arrest him.

The college has toughened its security measures since the shootings.

Police and other emergency workers, who were praised for their quick response to the incident, have also reviewed their action plans.
