TORONTO - Don Cherry says fixing the issue of head shots in the NHL won't be accomplished through rule changes.

He says the real problem is the lack of respect players have for one another.

The colourful and outspoken "Hockey Night in Canada" commentator made the comments this morning at Toronto's Air Canada Centre ahead of the annual Home Hardward CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

The spotlight is sharply on head shots in the NHL again with superstar Sidney Crosby out with a concussion.

Cherry says he knew from the moment Crosby took a borderline hit by Washington's David Steckel on New Year's Day that the Penguins captain was hurt.

Cherry adds that when he was playing, nobody would deliver blindside hits because they would pay for it later, but the instigator rule now prevents vigilante justice.
