A new band comprising city firefighters hits the stage Friday night in an effort to raise money for a colleague living with cancer.

Formed to help fund treatment for city firefighter Cam Haunton, Backdraft consists of two core members whose ranks are supplemented by other firefighters as availability permits.

Mike Fleming leads the band, playing guitar and singing lead. He is a 10-year veteran of the service and has been performing live and recording music for almost 40 years.

Playing percussion is Dave McNamara, who has been fighting fires for 12 years and performing and touring in bands for 25 years.

Backdraft plays at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Hollywood on the Queensway. The group says it plans to do future shows as well to support costs that aren't covered by OHIP for other members of the service with cancer.
