Firefighters have taken a defensive position against a house fire in Richmond Hill.

Deputy Chief Bryan Burbidge, of Richmond Hill Fire & Emergency Services, says the call for the fire at a home on Boake Trail, in the Leslie Street and 16th Avenue area, came in around 8 p.m.

Burbidge says the homeowner was working with a torch in the basement when the flame got away from him and into the walls of the home.

The fire quickly spread to the second floor and into the roof, Burbidge says.

The 28 firefighters on scene are now tackling the blaze from a defensive position.

The homeowner suffered minor injuries in the fire, Burbidge says. No other injuries have been reported.
