The owner of an East York house where two people died in a fatal fire last week has been charged.

Fire officials arrived at the home located on Bastedo Avenue, near Danforth and Coxwell avenues, shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Aug 12.

Firefighters said they did not hear a fire alarm when they entered the building.

Two people, a 40-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, were found near the front door on the main floor before they were pulled from the semi-detached home.

The man died of his injuries at the scene. Though the woman was revived and rushed to the hospital, she later succumbed to her injuries.

A joint investigation conducted by Toronto Fire Services and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall allege a number of violations of the Ontario Fire Code.

James Edward Webster, 30, of Toronto, faces two charges related to failure to provide, install and maintain smoke alarms on the property.

Webster has also been charged with violations related to fire doors and electrical wiring.

Under the Ontario Fire Code, each charge carries a maximum fine of $50,000, according to a release from Toronto Fire Services.
