A man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the lobby of an Oshawa building has been arrested.

Durham police said Evan Derek Sweet was apprehended by Peterborough police earlier Friday and was later transferred to their custody.

His arrest comes a day after police issued a public safety warning for the 28-year-old following two alleged sexual assaults that occurred within 24 hours.

Durham Regional Police said they attended a building on St. Lawrence Street just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday for a sexual assault call.

“A male armed with a knife sexually assaulted a female in the lobby of the building,” police allege.

Officers arrived but said they did not find the suspect and victim. Following a search of the area, the victim was located with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

On Thursday, just after 1 p.m., police said Sweet was seen in the area of Harwood Avenue South and Hunt Street in Ajax, where he allegedly sexually assaulted another person.

Sweet has been charged with robbery, assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and two counts of sexual assault.

Investigators continue to ask anyone with information to contact them at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5316 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
