A 22-year-old motorcyclist from Scarborough has died after colliding with an electronic sign board inside a construction zone on Highway 401 in Pickering, OPP say.
Police say the single-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday in the westbound lanes, between Brock and Westney roads.

The person operating the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene, they said.
“A motorcyclist, for unknown reasons, reportedly at a high rate of speed, was in the closure when it struck one of the electronic signs, resulting in the rider being ejected from the motorcycle and receiving fatal injuries as a result,” Sgt Kerry Schmidt, of the OPP, said in a video posted on X on Saturday morning.

The westbound Highway 401 at Westney Road was shut down for several hours as police investigated but has since reopened.
Anyone who saw what happened or anyone with video footage of this collision is asked to contact the OPP’s Toronto Detachment at 416-235-4981. Tips can also be provided to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
