In an effort to help large dogs find homes, the city is temporarily waving adoption fees for all canines weighing 50 lbs or more, including puppies who will grow into large dogs.

The city’s website says larger dog breeds are “often overlooked” and end up staying in the shelters nearly twice as long as other breeds.

In this adoption campaign, the city along with Toronto Animal Services is aiming to find permanent homes for their larger friends this holiday.

The promotion will run through Dec. 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Typically, the fee for adopting a dog in Toronto is $185 for a male and $215 for a female.

A comprehensive guide to adoption is available on the city’s website. It includes all the information you need know before becoming a pet parent, like documentation needed, preparing your home for a pet and ballpark expenses you should expect.
