An ex-Toronto cop has been charged with gross indecency in connection with a historical sexual assault.
The incident in question allegedly occurred between 1981 and 1982 and involved a female victim, the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said.
The accused was a member of Toronto Police Service at the time of the assault, but has since retired, the civilian agency said.
On March 13, 2024, the SIU, which is called in to investigate when police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person, was notified of allegations of a sexual nature against Luigi DiLorenzo and commenced an investigation.
Joseph Martino, the director of the SIU, determined there are reasonable grounds to believe the former police officer committed a criminal offence during that time.
As a result, DiLorenzo has been charged with one count of gross indecency.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 5.
“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” it said in a news release.
