Toronto police are investigating a smash-and-grab robbery at a jewelry store in Scarborough’s Golden Mile area.
The incident happened at Golden Mile Shopping Centre, which is on the northeast corner of Eglinton Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue.
Toronto police said they attended that area just after 3:30 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of suspects using hammers to smash the glass at a jewelry store.
The suspects fled the area in a vehicle in an unknown direction.
A man who runs a neighbouring store in the shopping centre told CTV News Toronto he heard banging and glass breaking at the time of the robbery.
He then saw the suspects running and security chasing after them, as well as some civilians trying to help.
“It’s just frustrating and scary, and innocent people are terrified because they don’t want to see this,” the man told CTV News.
He also said he thinks he saw what looked like a replica firearm and at least two hammers.
Other witnesses say three suspects smashed the glass of a Daniel Jewellery kiosk located in the hall across from a dollar store in the mall.
There is no word on the quantity of items stolen.
It is also not known at this point if anyone was injured.
The shopping centre remains open as police continue their investigation.
