5 suspects tried to rob Scarborough jewelry store by driving stolen pickup truck into it, police say

Police say a stolen pickup truck was driven into a jewelry store in Scarborough during an attempted robbery.

Toronto police are looking for five suspects after they allegedly drove a pickup truck into a jewelry store in Scarborough store during an attempted robbery Wednesday night.

The incident happened in a plaza near Eglinton Avenue East and Brimley Road just before 6:30 p.m.

“Information was received that five suspects had backed a truck into a jewelry store and were attempting a robbery,” Duty Insp. Saleem Husain told reporters at the scene.

He said the truck also hit a gas line, prompting police to evacuate the plaza until it was turned off.

The store owner sustained minor injuries during the incident, Husain said.

Meanwhile, the suspects fled in another light-coloured vehicle. Police do not have descriptions of the suspects other than they were wearing masks.

“We’ve also learned that the vehicle used to back into the jewelry store was stolen, and nothing appears to have been obtained in the robbery,” Husain said.

“They were unable to get into the store with the vehicle in the way.”

Husain noted that the area was busy at the time of the robbery, which he said was concerning.

“We have all resources, again, investigating this to try to bring the suspects to justice,” he added.

Police are asking anyone with information, including those driving by the area at the time and had dashcam, to contact 41 Division at 416-808-4100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
