Two people were taken to hospital and two dogs were rescued from a Parkdale walk-up apartment after a fire broke out on Friday afternoon.

Toronto emergency crews received a call for the fire in the area of King Street and Beaty Avenue shortly before 5 p.m.

When crews arrived, Toronto Fire Services (TFS) said they encountered heavy flames and smoke on the balcony decks at the rear of the building.

Crews on multiple hose lines, TFS said, worked through three floors to push the flames out of the structure.

TFS noted that all occupants safely got out, and two people had to be taken to the hospital for assessment.

Crews also rescued two dogs from the building, TFS said. There is no word on their condition.

The fire has been knocked down, and TFS said crews would remain on the scene pending investigation.

The cause, origin and circumstances of the fire are unknown.
