Woman dead, man arrested, following shooting in downtown Toronto apartment

One man has been arrested after a woman died following a shooting inside an apartment near Dundas and Jarvis streets.

A woman has died and a man is under arrest following a shooting at a high-rise in downtown Toronto on Saturday morning, police say.

The incident happened in the city’s Garden District neighbourhood, at 251 Jarvis St., at Dundas Street East.

Police say they were called to that area at around 9:30 a.m. for a shooting inside an apartment unit.

There, officers found a female victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Insp. Dan Pravica told reporters on Saturday afternoon. He later said that he could not confirm exactly how many times the woman had been shot.

Emergency responders performed life-saving measures and the female was rushed to a local trauma centre by paramedics with life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased at the hospital, he said.

The Homicide and Missing Persons Unit has now taken carriage of this investigation.

Police trying to notify victim’s next-of-kin

He said at this point, police are working to notify the victim’s next-of-kin and are not releasing information about her identity, except to say that she is an “adult female.”

Police have said that a male has been arrested in relation to his investigation “some distance away from here,” but have not confirmed if the suspect and the victim are known to each other.

The senior duty office added that there is no “further threat to public safety.”

Details about the suspect and what charges he may be facing have not been released.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are also unknown at this time.

Toronto police are expected to provide further details in a news release.

Currently, investigators from the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit are working out of 51 Division and anyone who wishes to speak with them directly can contact at 416-808-5100.

“It’s a sad, unfortunate circumstance, tragic, as a matter of fact, that happened, and we’re appealing for any, any assistance at all. If anyone heard or saw anything, to come forward and let us know,” Pravica said.

“If you heard or saw something, please come forward. Our officers are currently on scene, canvassing the building, canvassing for further video, any information, even if they think it’s the slightest, will potentially help us in our investigation.”
