All lanes reopen on Hwy. 401 in North York after dump truck fire

Lanes are still blocked and travel times are delayed after a dump truck fire on Highway 401 near Allen Road.

All westbound lanes on Hwy. 401 in North York have reopened after a dump truck carrying gravel caught fire earlier this afternoon.

The Ontario Provincial Police announced the closure at about 2:30 p.m., saying the two express lanes were closed at Allen Road.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the fire started after the vehicle’s brake lines sheared, causing the parking brakes to engage while the truck was still moving. The resulting heat ignited the trailer.

No injuries were reported.

Cleanup efforts were completed at about 5 p.m.
