A 20-year-old is facing impaired driving charges after one person was killed and two others were injured in a fiery, three-vehicle crash in Whitby Sunday night, provincial police say.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said officers responded to a crash on Highway 401 near Thickson Road at approximately 7:10 p.m. Two of the vehicles caught fire after the collision, they said in a news release published Monday morning.
A 43-year-old woman from Kingston was pronounced deceased at the scene. She has not been identified. Two other individuals were transported to hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
In an update, OPP said they charged Jaxon Christie, of Lincoln, Ont., one of the drivers involved in the “rear-end type” collision. Christie has been charged with dangerous and impaired driving causing death, and operation of a vehicle with excess blood over 80mg/alc in 100ml/blood.
The charges have not been tested in court.
Police said the highway’s westbound lanes at Thickson Road were closed for several hours, but reopened shortly after 4 a.m.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or has dashcam or surveillance footage from the area at the time, to contact the Toronto OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
