Police are searching for five suspects after an early morning home invasion in Vaughan sent one of the residents to hospital with a gunshot wound.

York Regional Police say they were called to the area of Sir Sanford Fleming Way and Grand Turk Avenue, located west of Dufferin Street, shortly after 3:45 a.m.

Responding officers say several suspects broke through the rear glass door of the home, with one of them armed with a handgun.

“When the residents were confronted, a struggle ensued and the gun was discharged,” police say in a news release issued Tuesday.

Police say one victim was shot and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, adding no other residents were injured. They did not say how many residents were at home at the time.

During the struggle, police say the handgun was dropped and the suspects took off in a dark-coloured SUV. Police recovered the gun at the scene.

Investigators believe one of the suspects may have also been injured during the confrontation and are asking witnesses to come forward.

Police are searching for four men between the ages of 25 to 30 years old, and another suspect where no description is currently available.

Officers describe one suspect as about five-foot-10 with a skinny build, who was wearing a black hoodie, black balaclava and was carrying a handgun with an extended magazine.

Police describe another suspect as about five-foot-eight with a skinny build and was also wearing a balaclava.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact YRP’s Hold-Up Unit or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
