A 40-year-old man is facing several fraud-related charges after allegedly stealing mail in Newmarket.

Last month, York Regional Police (YRP) launched an investigation after a number of victims contacted them about missing letters.

Police said they determined that “various banking and identification documents belonging to the victims went missing from their mailbox.” Shortly after, bank accounts and credit cards were established in the victims’ names, they said.

Jiaming Wang, 40, of no fixed address, was arrested on Monday.

He has been charged with numerous offences, including seven counts of fraud over $5,000 and six counts of identity theft.

Investigators said at the time of his arrest, an “overwhelming amount of identification and other fraudulent documentation was located, none of which were in his name.”

York Regional Police believe Wang is responsible for numerous fraud-related incidents that have yet to be reported and are appealing to anyone who may have had contact with him to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
