A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to more than four years in prison after being found guilty of five charges following a fatal high-speed collision in King City almost one year ago.
The crash happened on Feb. 18, 2024 at the intersection of King Road and Eighth Concession, just east of the community of Nobleton.
York Regional Police (YRP) said they were called to that area shortly before 7 a.m. for reports of a single-vehicle collision.
Police said when officers arrived they found a black Infiniti G37 that had hit a light pole.
They said there were six occupants in the vehicle, including an 18-year-old woman from Brampton who was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other passengers sustained serious injuries, but survived. The vehicle’s then-18-year-old driver was not hurt in the crash. Police did not provide further any details about the vehicle’s six occupant.
Investigators previously said their investigation revealed the occupants of the vehicle had attended a party in Caledon prior to the collision.
They also said that the vehicle involved in the crash was allegedly travelling at high speeds on Highway 400 and King Road before the crash, sometime between the hours of 5 and 7 a.m. on Feb. 18.
“Through investigation it was learned the vehicle was travelling over 200 kilometers an hour prior to the collision,” YRP said in its lastest news release announcing the sentencing.
On Feb. 27, 2024, 19-year-old Denrick Rose, of Brampton, was charged with one count each of dangerous operation cause death and fail to comply with release order as well as three counts of dangerous operation cause bodily harm.
Police said at the time of the collision, the accused was on a release order for previous unrelated charges. He has been in custody since his arrest.
On February 3, Rose was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison. His licence was also suspended for 10 years.
“York Regional Police reminding the public that excessive speed is the most common contributing factor to fatal collisions. Your decisions behind the wheel can determine the future for you, your family, and for other motorists,” they said.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
