York Regional Police say old undetonated blasting caps have been discovered inside a home in Markham.

Officers are at the residence near Lee Avenue and Sunman Court, in the area of 14th Avenue and Brimley Road.

Police say the homeowner found the caps, which are small explosive devices that are usually combined with a fuse to detonate a large explosive.

“Due to the volatile nature of old materials, the Emergency Response Unit is attending to safely assess the disposal of the items,” police say, asking residents to avoid the area while officers conduct their work.

“Residents may hear loud noises if the blasting caps must be safely detonated on scene.”
