A 41-year-old man is dead after getting into an altercation with police inside an Oakville hotel.

The man, whose name has not been publicly released, was shot by a Halton police officer at around 5:30 a.m. inside the Monte Carlo Inn on South Service Road East, according to the province’s Special Investigations Unit.

The man was rushed to Hamilton General hospital with life-threatening injuries but didn't survive.

The SIU -- a provincial agency which oversees any investigation where a civilian is injured or killed in the presence of police -- is trying to determine what led to the shooting.

Seven investigators and three forensic experts have been assigned by the SIU to examine the details of the case.

However, officials are still asking the public to call them with details of what they may have witnessed.

Anyone with information is being asked to call 416-622-1965.
