A 30-year-old woman died in hospital Thursday morning from injuries she sustained when she was struck by a five-tonne truck.

The woman was crossing Adelaide Street at Brant Street when she was hit by the vehicle at 7:39 a.m.

She was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died shortly after arriving at a trauma centre.

The woman, who has not been identified, is the 11th pedestrian to be fatally struck on city roads this year.

That's compared with only seven pedestrian fatalities in the same time last year.

"Essentially the numbers have doubled and whether it is due to pedestrian error, driver error or a combination of both it is still up and what we are trying to impress upon people is that even if they are crossing properly at a roadway they can't assume that the vehicle that is approaching is going to stop," Traffic Services Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24 at the scene.

"They have to be aware of their surroundings and they need to get eye contact with the driver of the vehicle."

Adelaide Street was closed near Brant Street for several hours, but has since reopened.

The investigation into the accident continues.

"Obviously we can't assign blame at this time, but the evidence is going to tell us what happened," Stibbe said.
