PARIS - Aviation authorities say they are ready to send in police to replace striking airport security personnel to limit the strike's impact on travellers leaving for the Christmas holiday weekend.

Civil aviation authority DGAC said that the strike -- in its 5th day -- was causing delays at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport and in Lyon.

Speaking on France Info radio, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said Tuesday that police would begin replacing striking workers on Wednesday "if necessary."

He said it is "out of the question" that holiday travellers be "held hostage" by the strike.

Unions representing security personnel launched the walkout Friday to demand negotiations with management over an increase in pay. It was timed for maximum effect during the holiday getaway season.
