BERLIN - Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., won the women's 1,000-metre race Sunday at the season-opening World Cup long-track speedskating meet.

Nesbitt won in one minute 16.86 seconds. Teammate Shannon Rempel of Winnipeg was second in 1:17.11 and Laurine van Riessen of the Netherlands was third in 1:17.21.

Ottawa's Kristina Groves was fifth in 1:17.46.

World champion Anni Friesinger of Germany did not compete as she is still recovering from knee surgery. Friesinger is not expected to return until next month.

Olympic champion Shani Davis of the United States narrowly lost to Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands in the men's 1,000 metres.

Groothuis finished in 1:09.13. Davis was second in 1:09.15 and Simon Kuipers of the Netherlands was third in 1:09.30.
