NAGANO, Japan - Canada's Christine Nesbitt won the women's 1,000-metre on Sunday at a World Cup long-track speedskating meet in Japan.

The London, Ont., native took gold in 1:16.38, beating China's Yu Jing by 0.99 seconds. China's Jin Peiyu was third in 1:17.60.

It was Nesbitt's second medal of the weekend. She finished second on the podium to American Jennifer Rodriguez in Saturday's 1,000.

"I was really excited about participating in this race," said Nesbitt. "My concentration was strong and my competitive side brought out the best in me. I really wanted to win.

"I was able to strengthen my start and to increase my overall speed. I think I can still improve my performance for the (2010) Olympics."

Denny Morrison also collected his second medal of the weekend. The Fort St. John, B.C., native took the bronze in the men's 1,000-metre Sunday, a day after grabbing silver in the same distance.

"I'm happy with my performance this weekend," said Morrison. "I was hoping to step onto the podium. I was able to achieve all of my objectives, both technically, in the execution and in my overall comfort level.

"I was also able to finish within 0.31 seconds of my main rival, the American Shani Davis."

Davis set a rink record to win his second title at the distance in as many days.

The American won in one minute, 8.92 seconds, finishing 0.24 seconds ahead of South Korea's Lee Kyou-hyuk. Morrison clocked in at 1:09.23.

Lee won the men's 500 in 34.92, edging China's Yu Fengtong, who was second in 34.95.

China's Yu Jing won the women's 500 in 38.63, 0.09 seconds ahead of South Korean Lee Sang-hwa. China's Xing Aihua finished third in 38.78.
