CHARLESTON, S.C. - Mike Zaher scored the winning goal as the Charleston Battery defeated Toronto FC 2-1 Wednesday at the Carolina Challenge Cup exhibition soccer tournament.

Zaher was awarded a penalty shot in the second half after Battery forward Dane Kelly was pulled down inside the box. Stefan Frei saved Zaher's shot, but the defender collected the rebound and lifted it over the Toronto goalkeeper.

Kelly scored the other goal in the 43rd minute for Charleston, which plays in the United Soccer Leagues Professional Division, the third tier of North American professional soccer.

Toronto opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Battery defender Nigel Marples handled the ball in the box. TFC midfielder Nathan Sturgis converted the ensuing penalty kick.

TFC, which plays in top-tier Major League Soccer, fell to 0-2 at the exhibition tournament.
