The City of Toronto is going ahead with several big-ticket projects after its 2009 capital budget was given the green light on Wednesday.

The $1.6 billion budget was approved by council yesterday, and nearly $800 million will go toward public transit in Toronto.

However, officials say the bulk of that money will be spent on maintaining the TTC's existing system rather than adding service.

Mayor David Miller says spending in the 2009 budget will help create 30,000 jobs in Toronto as the global economic crisis worsens.

However, some critics say the city isn't doing enough, and more resources should be spent on deteriorating roads and recreational facilities.

The city also says TTC fares will be frozen next year.
