Several Toronto city councillors are refusing to talk about pay raises on the council floor.

A motion was introduced Wednesday night asking councillors to forego a planned 2.42 per cent cost-of-living pay increase as a sign of leadership in difficult economic times.

However, the two-thirds majority of support required to discuss the motion in the council chamber was not reached.

The raise kicks in next week. The issue of whether to defer it won't come before the mayor-controlled executive committee until a meeting scheduled for April 7. If passed there, it would be ratified by council at a meeting later that month.

By that time, councillors will have received the extra money for more than two months.
