TORONTO - Canadian film pioneer Alanis Obomsawin and documentarian Ron Mann are being honoured at the upcoming Hot Docs festival.

Programming director Sean Farnel says the two artists share "a pioneering spirit and punkish iconoclasm."

Obosawin -- whose celebrated work includes 1993's "Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance" -- is getting the festival's outstanding achievement award.

Mann -- whose 1999 film "Grass" examined marijuana while his upcoming "Know Your Mushrooms" focuses on fungi -- will be honoured in the Focus On retrospective, showcasing the work of a mid-career filmmaker.

Hot Docs will also mark the 70th anniversary of the National Film Board of Canada with a retrospective of its finest releases.

The festival runs April 30 to May 10 and will feature more than 170 documentaries from Canada and around the world.
