Glendale, Ariz. - Head coach Wayne Gretzky was absent from Phoenix Coyotes training camp for the second straight day.

Associate coach Ulf Samuelsson, running the camp on an interim basis, put players through drills Sunday morning as they took the ice together at Jobing.com Arena for the first time this season.

Gretzky has elected to stay away from camp due to an uncertain contractual status brought on by the team's pending bankruptcy case.

Even though Coyotes GM Don Maloney insists Gretzky is still the team's head coach, he's not sure when the Great One might rejoin the team.

Phoenix is scheduled to play its first pre-season game Tuesday and will open the regular season Oct. 3 in Los Angeles.

In addition to serving as the Coyotes coach, Gretzky is also a managing partner of the team.
