LONDON - Michael Turner scored with a header to take Hull back up to third in the Premier League on Sunday after a 1-0 victory over West Ham, and Tottenham lost 2-1 at Stoke to stay in last place.
Turner rose to power home Andy Dawson's corner in the 51st minute to give the Tigers their fifth victory. Hull is again among the traditional leading four of English football in its first season in the top flight.
Hull trails Chelsea and Liverpool, but is above fourth-place Arsenal and No. 5 Manchester United.
"There's people dancing in the dressing room so we don't have to do a warm-down any more," Hull manager Phil Brown said. "It's a good atmosphere at the moment and long may it continue."
Chelsea won 5-0 at Middlesbrough on Saturday, when Liverpool twice came from behind to beat Wigan 3-2. The Blues and the Reds are level on 20 points from eight games and Hull has 17.
Arsenal, which rallied from a goal down to beat Everton 3-1 Saturday, has 16 points and Man United, which outplayed West Bromwich Albion 4-0, has 14 points with a game in hand.
Tottenham coach Juande Ramos could be very close to losing his job after his team lost at Stoke, which climbed a spot to be 18th. Spurs also finished the game with nine men after straight red cards for defenders Gareth Bale and Michael Dawson.
With only two points from eight games, Tottenham is three points behind Newcastle and that could worsen if the Magpies win Monday's game against Manchester City. If that happens, Spurs would be five points adrift of moving out of the relegation zone.
"We need to work very hard to improve the situation," Ramos said. "Sometimes it's difficult to explain the situation, but when the team wins one game, two matches, it's possible to improve the situation."
Bale was sent off in the 17th minute after bringing down Tom Soares inside the area. Danny Higginbotham scored the penalty after the ball had to be replaced four times because the wind kept blowing it off the spot.
Darren Bent made it 1-1 in the 25th when he slid the ball home from eight yards after Alan Hutton's shot had been deflected. TV replays suggested the striker was offside when the fullback made his initial shot.
Rory Delap was left unmarked to stab home a right-wing cross from Mamady Sidibe in the 53rd as Stoke regained the lead.
Jonathan Woodgate tripped Soares inside the area near the end of the match, but Ricardo Fuller's penalty hit both posts and the follow-up shot by Delap hit the crossbar.
Dawson was sent off in the 11 minutes of injury time, added on for several lengthy stoppages.
Spurs defender Vedran Corluka was carried off the field unconscious. Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen also left the field with blood oozing from his head after another incident.
Sheffield Wednesday edged neighbour Sheffield United 1-0 in an eventful meeting of the two neighbours at Hillsborough in the League Championship.
United defender Matt Kilgallon was sent off in the 29th minute and Wednesday's Jermaine Johnson in the 63rd. Having taken the lead through veteran defender Steve Watson, Wednesday squandered the chance of a second goal when Deon Burton's penalty was saved.
The victory meant the Owls jumped 10 places and above the Blades into fifth in the standings although seven points behind leader Wolves, which beat Coventry 2-1 on Saturday.
