CLEVELAND - The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned right-hander Joel Carreno to Triple-A Las Vegas after he lost his first major league start.

Carreno gave up four runs and six hits in six innings Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. He allowed a pair of home runs to Carlos Santana. Carreno struck out three and walked four.

Toronto manager John Farrell said left-hander Aaron Laffey will be called up from Las Vegas and will be used out of the bullpen. Toronto won't need a fifth starter until April 21.

Carreno pitched in relief 11 times a year ago for the Blue Jays, who play their home opener Monday night against Boston.
