TORONTO - Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory says he is pleased with the province's announcement they will extend Highway 407 to 35-115.

Tory says he just wishes the government would speed up its construction.

Ontario will build and operate the extension of 407 which is a toll road -- but it's not yet clear if drivers will face an additional charge to use it.

The new highway will extend into the Peterborough riding that Tory is hoping to win in a byelection.

Transportation Minister Jim Bradley says it is just a coincidence the announcement was made before the byelection is called.

And he denied the announcement has anything to do with shoring up Liberal support with voters in the riding.

The proposed extension from Pickering to Clarington is expected to open in 2013.
