TORONTO - Joseph Boyden and Rawi Hage are among the finalists vying for this year's Scotiabank Giller Prize.

The $50,000 top prize will be handed out on Nov. 11 at a gala dinner in Toronto. Others on the short list receive $5,000.

Boyden, who divides his time between northern Ontario and Louisiana, was nominated for "Through Black Spruce," while Hage of Montreal got the nod for "Cockroach."

Rounding out the short list is Toronto's Anthony De Sa for "Barnacle Love," Edmonton resident Marina Endicott for "Good to a Fault" and Mary Swan of Guelph, Ont., for "The Boys in the Trees."

All the nominated books are novels except for De Sa's collection of short stories, which is his first book.

Hage was a previous Giller finalist for his novel, "De Niro's Game."

This year's jury is made up of author Margaret Atwood, Liberal MP Bob Rae and author Colm Toibin. They read 95 books submitted by 38 publishing houses.

This is the 15th year for the Giller, which was established in 1994 by Toronto businessman Jack Rabinovitch.

The ceremony will air live on Bravo with repeat broadcasts on CTV, Star and BookTelevision.
