Laffey elects free agency over triple-A assignment

TORONTO - Left-hander Aaron Laffey has chosen to become a free agent rather than report to the Toronto Blue Jays' triple-A affiliate in Buffalo.

The Blue Jays announced the decision Monday. Laffey made one start for Toronto after being claimed on waivers from the New York Mets on April 23.

Laffey, 28, did not record a decision in his lone appearance last Friday and was designated for assignment the next day. He allowed two earned runs over 2 2/3 innings in a 6-4 loss to the Yankees in New York.

In five games this season with the Blue Jays and Mets, Laffey was 0-0 with a 7.11 earned-run average.

Laffey made 16 starts for the Blue Jays last season. He went 4-6 with a 4.56 ERA in 22 games.

Laffey has a career record of 25-29 with a 4.45 ERA over 153 appearances. He has also played for the Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners.
