A Mississauga man has been charged with fraud after he allegedly organized a fake hockey tournament in Europe, Peel Regional Police say.

Young hockey players, from 16 to 21 years of age, were allegedly promised a chance to play in a European hockey tournament with professional hockey scouts in attendance.

Police allege a man used the name "Frances Poirier" operated "Ontario Central Scouting" in a scheme that affected about 100 victims of approxmiately $2,800 each.

When the players arrived in France for the tournament, they found out there was none.

Randy Gumbley, 42, was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
