Garbage collectors are back on the job in Peel Region after a deal was reached early this morning to bring an end to a strike that began about 24 hours prior.

Waste Management Director Norman Lee told CP24 that Emterra Environmental and a union representing about 100 garbage collectors came to an agreement on a new contract at around 1 a.m.

Lee said the deal was then ratified a short time later, allowing some garbage collectors to return to work this morning.

“It has been ratified by the workers and in fact some of the workers are out on the street right now collecting garbage,” Lee said. “It is a very quick turnaround for getting a deal. I would think everybody is happy to be back at work and back in business.”

Employees with Emterra Environmental, a private company contracted to collect garbage in 60 per cent of Peel Region, had been on strike since midnight on Thursday.

As a result of the labour action, residential trash collection to as many as 160,000 houses had been affected, including all residences in Caledon as well as in areas west of Highway 410 and north of Bovaird Drive in Brampton and west of the Credit River in Mississauga.

Peel Region is instructing residents to leave their waste at the curb if their collection was missed so it can be picked up over the weekend.

"It will be picked up either today or on the weekend and by Monday it will be back to business as usual," Lee said.

No details have been released about the settlement between the 100 striking unionized garbage collectors and Emterra Environmental, however a spokesperson for the union told CP24 on Friday that there was a "very strong vote" in favour of the deal.
