Subway service on a downtown Toronto artery was halted for four hours Thursday following a mid-day track-level shooting at Osgoode station.

Police were called shortly before 11 a.m. after gunshots rung out at the station, wounding a 19-year-old male victim in the stomach and thigh.

Witnesses say he was shot at point-blank range after what police are calling a dispute among a group of men. At least three shots were fired, police say.

Early reports from witnesses said he was unconscious when paramedics arrived.

The man was rushed to St. Michael's hospital, where he is in serious but not life-threatening condition.

He is the only person who appears to have been injured in the shooting, Toronto police say, adding he had come downtown from the north end of the city on the subway.

Police are looking for a suspect described as a black male with a light complexion, between six feet tall and six foot two, and weighing 185 pounds. He was wearing a black parka with a fur trim, black pants and a black Blue Jays hat with the team's new logo.

Police have released an image of the suspect from surveillance video.

The shots were fired on the southbound platform after several men got off a train that had stopped at the station. The fight continued on the mezzanine level of the station and the suspect fled the scene.

TTC passengers were seen stampeding from the station, which was cordoned off with police tape following the shooting.

Canine units and Emergency Task Force officers -- which are called in for gun crime situations -- descended into the subway system to look for clues shortly after the altercation.

Officers have set up a command post in the area, where they are interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage in an attempt to identify the other members of the group.

Police have also been spotted canvassing the Queen Street West area, going as far east as Spadina Avenue, and north and south from the station on University Avenue. Osgoode station is located near several court houses and the city's opera house.

Police have one person in custody, who they are referring to as a "person of interest," but say he is not a suspect in the shooting.

A weapon has not been recovered, but shell casings were found at the scene. Police say they are looking for a handgun.

Police say the victim is known to them and he is speaking to investigators.

Witnesses are asked to call Toronto police at 416-808-5200.

TTC train service to Osgoode station has resumed after the over five-hour closure.
