A state of emergency has been declared in the town of Port Hope because of a water shortage that is now in its fourth day.

The town's two water pumps are broken and are operating at about 47 per cent capacity. New pumps have been ordered but they're not expected to arrive from the U.S. until the end of the week.

Officials say water quality is not a concern but residents have been asked to conserve water until the problem has been fixed.

In the meantime, the town is setting up a water distribution centre to help and the Red Cross is sending volunteers to the area.

The business community is also pitching in. Nestle Canada donated a truckload of bottled water, the local Tim Hortons is only using disposable plates, cups and utensils to avoid having to wash any dishes.
